Leadership by Example
Business owners are faced with a peculiar dilemma. They’re expected to show everyone else the way, to act as guides, and to be the exemplar of what the business is all about. But we’re not all natural-born leaders. We’re not all intuitively capable of showing others the way. We’re not all able to communicate our vision with such passion and clarity that people are lining up around the block to get a piece of the action. So, how do we lead our business by example? How do we figure out what all of those natural-born leaders seem to understand so well?
What really constitutes a leader?
Leaders have one thing followers don’t have: VISION. Leaders have a destination in mind. Leaders have a dream. Travel back in time and remember what possessed you to open the doors of your business in the first place. What was your fantasy? What made your heart beat a little faster, your imagination run wild, your creative juices start flowing?
True leaders can’t rid themselves of it—that nagging dream that splinters in their minds. They can’t escape it. Leaders see the sheer futility of resisting it and therefore, it happens. Time stops. A miracle occurs. The heartbeat thunders. The idea becomes a reality.
But vision alone isn’t enough. Every great leader must have a vision. But being a great leader is a little more complicated than that.
